Abstract: Cyberculture is a socio-technical phenomenon that emerged in the late 1960s and consolidated with the World Wide Web, the Internet. Among its most recent developments are digital social networks and artificial intelligence, with profound impacts on events and experiences, both individual and collective. Digital anthropology, in turn, emerges as a subfield of social and cultural anthropology, dedicated to understanding the impact and cultural implications of this process. Among the main issues addressed by digital anthropology regarding cyberculture are the incorporation of digital resources and tools in its research processes; the impacts of digital technologies on cultural processes, on the constitution of subjectivities and on relations of otherness and dissonant interest groups; the impacts of new digital technologies on research in its methodological, epistemological and ethical dimensions; and the impacts of digital technologies on ethnography in practical and theoretical terms. Indeed, research and reflections resulting from this work have contributed to understanding and problematizing a myriad of possibilities for thinking and acting upon the digital, making it possible to rethink not only the place of anthropology as an academic field, but also the subjects with whom it dialogues in its process of self-production and knowledge production. Based on this debate, we propose this Thematic Axis with the aim of welcoming proposals that allow for intensifying the debate on cyberculture from an anthropological perspective of the digital, with a view to discussing the scope, limits, and challenges for research in cyberspace. We hope to welcome proposals submitted by anthropologists, social scientists, professors, researchers, undergraduate research advisors, and undergraduate and graduate students from universities, federal institutes, and basic education networks, whose research focuses on problematizing cyberculture from theoretical and methodological perspectives derived from anthropological thought.

Objectives:

  • To intensify the debate on cyberculture from an anthropological perspective of the digital world;

  • To discuss the scope, limitations, and challenges of research in cyberspace.

Target audience: anthropologists, social scientists, professors, researchers, undergraduate research advisors, undergraduate and graduate students from universities, federal institutes, and basic education networks.
